(1841-1902)s First Major League Win For Tampa
Kaz the MagnificentBay
It seemed like only yesterday that 18-year-old Scott Kazmir was cutting his teeth in pro ball with the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The young Texan with the small frame and giant left arm was the New York Mets’ first-round pick in 2002, and didn’t take long to draw a buzz when he first appeared at KeySpan Park that summer.
The kid lived up to his potential too, striking out 34 batters while allowing one earned run and five hits for a minuscule 0.50 ERA in his brief time with Brooklyn before climbing up the minor league ladder.
At that time, the likes of Danny Garcia and Lenny DiNardo had not yet graduated to the major leagues, giving Kazmir the look of the first bona-fide big league prospect to come through Coney Island on his way to the parent-club Mets.
“He’s definitely special, and I think he has a bright future in front of him,” said then-Cyclones pitching coach Bobby Ojeda of Kazmir.
Ojeda was right.
